The safe room is operational any time a tornado warning has been issued, and sometimes a tornado watch depending on the conditions. We strongly encourage you not to attempt to travel to the shelter during an actual tornado warning, you should shelter in place. Never assume that the shelter is open when a warning is issued, we will post updates on the City of Milan, Tennessee Facebook page and through Milan Police Department's text alerts. This building is ADA accessible.

FEMA Building Rules:
  1. The FEMA Building is open to the general public.
  2. No pets are allowed in the safe room. Certified service animals may be allowed, but must be leashed at all times and must display their current vaccination record. 
  3. No alcohol, drugs, swearing, weapons of any type, disorderly conduct or disruptive behavior.
  4. No smoking inside or outside of the building. This also includes electronic smoking devices.
  5. No loitering or blocking of entry or exits. 
  6. Occupants are expected to be appropriately clothed.
  7. Parents and/or guardians must supervise children closely and keep them nearby.
  8. Any device that emits sounds that may disrupt others require the use of headers (i.e. music, cell phones, ipods, etc.).
  9. Occupants are required to keep their areas clean of trash and debris.
  10. The FEMA Building assumes no responsibility for personal belongings. Please keep all valuable items on your person at all times.

What is a FEMA Safe Room?
A safe room is a hardened structure specifically designed to meet the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) criteria and provide near-absolute protection in extreme wind events, including tornadoes and hurricanes.
 
How many people will the FEMA Safe Room hold?
The capacity of the FEMA Building is 1500 standing. 
 
What can the community members expect during their time at the FEMA Building?
The FEMA Building will only operate for the time that we are under a tornado watch and/or warning. The facility will only be able to provide the basic essentials, such as water, restroom facilities, basic first aid supplies and electricity. 
 
Can we bring our pets? 
No pets are allowed in the safe room. Certified service animals may be allowed, but must be leashed at all times and must display their current vaccination record.
